Isso se deve ao fato de a menor circulação do vírus na Europa devido às medidas de isolamento ter tornado mais difícil a avaliação da eficácia da imunização. A primeira fase de testes clínicos da vacina, iniciada em abril, envolveu cerca de mil adultos entre 18 e 55 anos.
As doses de testagem da ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 foram produzidas pela empresa italiana Advent-IRBM, de Pomezia, nos arredores de Roma, e a Universidade de Oxford já tem um acordo com a multinacional sueco-britânica AstraZeneca para a fabricação e distribuição da vacina em nível mundial.
A autorização da Agência Nacional de Vigilância Sanitária (Anvisa) para o estudo no Brasil foi publicada no Diário Oficial da União nesta terça-feira (2), após pedido da AstraZeneca.
No fim de maio, a multinacional disse ter obtido um financiamento de US$ 1 bilhão do governo dos Estados Unidos para a vacina e que já tem acordos que garantem a produção de pelo menos 400 milhões de doses, com os primeiros lotes previstos para setembro, caso os testes deem resultado positivo.
A vacina se baseia em um adenovírus de chimpanzés contendo a proteína spike, usada pelo coronavírus Sars-CoV-2 para agredir as células humanas.
